SEG AWARDS LEVEL 1 – CERTIFICATE IN FASHION AND TEXTILES (500/4330/4)
This extensive eight-week program provides participants with hands-on experience in various sewing techniques. Through this course, participants will develop a range of stitching skills, which will enable them to explore diverse garment construction techniques employed in the fashion industry, as well as those used in upholstery and soft-toy making.
Key Course Highlights: During the program, participants will engage in a variety of sewing techniques to create stitch samples. They will also gain proficiency in tasks such as measuring, cutting, and constructing basic patterns, all while acquiring the ability to distinguish between work of good and poor quality.
Course Curriculum: Participants will delve into four units, each carrying six credits, and upon successful completion of this intensive eight-week program, they will earn the SEG Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles.

- Garment Construction (6 credits – L/501/7936): This unit equips participants with skills in using industrial sewing machinery. It covers essential topics such as identifying the most suitable machinery for garment and soft furnishing production and constructing different parts of a garment using equipment like overlockers, flatbed straight stitch machines, cover stitch machines and buttonhole/button attach machines. Participants will learn correct threading techniques, bobbin insertion, and tension adjustment, and will produce a range of sewing tests and mock garments/soft furnishings.
- Soft Furnishing (6 credits – A/501/7933): In this unit, participants develop skills in using industrial sewing machinery, including lockstitch machines. They will create a variety of seam and hem samples, learn to join fabric using overlockers and adjust stitch tension for a desirable finish. Additionally, participants will work on mood boards and colour charts, understanding how to incorporate them into crafting a range of soft furnishings for homes.
- Introduction to Upholstery (6 credits – M/501/7931): This unit explores the selection of upholstery fabrics, their optimal use, and the essentials of covering a chair frame. Participants will become familiar with various tools of the trade and learn how to use them safely.
- Soft-toy Making (6 credits – F/501/7934): This unit instructs participants in the use of different machines and tools specific to soft-toy making. Safety protocols and correct usage of tools will be emphasized. Participants will construct a range of soft toys, with fabric assessments to ensure suitability for each toy’s intended purpose.
Teaching Method: The course is designed as a highly practical, hands-on experience, making it particularly well-suited for vocational learners. Participants will receive comprehensive induction on Health and Safety procedures and policies to ensure safe collaboration with fellow learners and tutors. Regular progress reviews will be conducted to maximize learning outcomes, with continuous feedback encouraged to facilitate an enriched learning experience.
